Article for the Hotel and Motel Association Newsletter, December 2006
Written by John Brodie
The issues surrounding climate change have been highlighted with the introduction by the Federal Government through the Building Code of Australia of increased energy efficiency requirements for all buildings .This applies Australia wide to new or refurbished buildings approved after May 2006.
This should be viewed not as an imposition but as a smart decision as it introduces the facility owner or operator to the substantial benefits of sustainability.
Sustainability (doing more for less) is now the way of the future. The smart business case demands it .Sustainable practice is cost effective ,provides numerous benefits in occupant comfortability, marketing and reduced running costs resulting in increased profits for any business and their facility. There is also the great improvement in environmental outcomes.
Sounds like the win/win situation!
The business that now embraces a sustainable approach is the business that won’t be left behind. It is the business that has the ‘point of difference’ and that will enable it to cater to the growing consumer awareness that will choose the sustainable business over the unsustainable business.
The accommodation industry is a major consumer of power and water .It also has its occupants as its main source of income .There is great scope through a sustainable approach to significantly reduce the demands on that limited Natural Capital while also improving the comfortability of occupants and staff.
These benefits are marketable and measurable.
Remember, no business can make money if it is inefficient.
Sustainability is all about cost effective efficiencies. It is applicable to new, old or refurbished buildings and their operations.
